Establish regular and effective communication

line
Communication between the National Park and the public concerned by the reintroduction of the manatee is an important part of the LIFE SIRENIA project. Many tools and communications media (website, brochures, information panels, etc.) will be produced and distributed on a regular basis in order to foster the ownership of the project by the public. Public conferences will be organised throughout the project.

Information panels

line

These panels are intended to raise the awareness of all the users of Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin concerning the presence and the respect of the manatees.

They will be available at strategic sites of the island such as the marina of Pointe-a-Pitre or at the head office of the National Park, at the manatee breeding centre, in Lamantin and in the ports of Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin.

Outreach activities

The LIFE SIRENIA project plans to establish an outreach programme for schools. It will aim to raise the awareness of schoolchildren concerning the protection and respect of the manatee, but also to help them discover its ecosystem and the consequences of human activity.

  • Educational workbooks and teaching kits may be proposed to students during classroom sessions. The goal will be to present a set of entertaining and varied interactive teaching materials.
  • A short educational film will illustrate the information provided throughout the sessions.
  • School outings can also be proposed to the classes.
  • Various learning projects will be conducted throughout the LIFE SIRENIA programme.
  • Information and awareness-raising for the general public
  • 15 public conferences will be organised in different places in order to raise awareness among a large number of people on the protection of the manatee. An updated slide show will be presented at these conferences, as well as a travelling exhibition.

Awareness-raising and the consultation of users

Communication and information work will be conducted in consultation with the users of Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin during regular workshops. This work is designed to define the good practices of use of the environment as a function of different scenarios of human frequentation of the bay.

In addition, annual or bi-annual meetings will be held. At the same time, the project will propose an accompaniment for users in their economic activities, via a programme of external funding (e.g. FEDER type funding).

Raising the awareness of political and public stakeholders

Several specialised meetings will be held to inform the public and political stakeholders of the influence of human activities on the manatee. Emphasis will be placed on the problems of wastewater management and treatment, the management of litter but also of the urbanisation of the coastline.

Organisation of meetings with the project experts

This meeting will bring together the project?s group of experts, whose expertise in sirenia is recognised at the global level. They will notably be consulted when decisions of a scientific nature must be taken within the framework of the project. Also, meetings will be organised in order to ensure the dissemination of the results of the project in scientific symposia and within the international scientific community.

Organisation of a project presentation seminar

This seminar will present to environmental professionals and to LIFE project holders the actions implemented within the framework of the project, during three days of workshops, debates, conferences and field visits. During this seminar, the results of the project will be disseminated in the presence of technicians and managers of natural spaces, partners and representatives of public and political bodies.
